Tice's move here is more sophisticated than straightforward denial — and more politically dangerous. He conceded climate change is real, then argued that trying to stop it is 'arrogant,' and pivoted to adaptation as the grown-up alternative. This is the 'realist vs doom-monger' play: Reform positions itself as the party that levels with people while everyone else wallows in green anxiety. The emotional trigger is genuine — net zero has been communicated in a language of sacrifice, targets, and abstractions that feels remote from household bills and daily life. Reform is right that the gap exists. The fraudulent move is what fills it: not a plan, not an investment programme, not a heat emergency framework. Just an instruction to enjoy it, with a wine recommendation.
The 'enjoy the warmth' framing only makes sense if your summer is insulated from its consequences. For the people estimated to have died in this year's heatwaves — elderly, low-income, living in top-floor flats without air conditioning — adaptation was not on the menu. Tice's adaptation plan is Chardonnay. Theirs was survival.
🎭 HYPOCRISY WATCH
In February 2025, Tice told Sky News that IPCC climate evidence was 'absolute garbage.' This week, with thousands estimated dead from heat, he said climate change is 'real' — then suggested Brits enjoy warmer summers for the wine. He can't have dismissed the science and now claim to be reckoning honestly with it.
THE GRAIN OF TRUTH
Net zero has too often been sold as a cost to bear now for benefits that feel distant and abstract. People who are struggling with energy bills that rose 13% in July are not wrong to notice that 'the green transition' sometimes sounds like a policy designed by and for people who can afford it. Reform didn't manufacture that resentment — years of top-down, poorly explained climate policy built the opening. Progressive communicators have consistently failed to make the costs of inaction feel as immediate and personal as the costs of action.
