THE SNAKE OIL
Reform's pitch for Operation Vanguard is simple: we act while everyone else talks. Peter Harris and colleagues will tell you they heard residents' fears and responded — boots on the ground, something visible, something real. The language in their own communications does deliberate work: 'gatherings of male migrants' invites the audience to supply a threat the data doesn't provide. The security presence signals danger without the evidence to justify it.
But here's the thing Reform can't spin away: it's their own document that exposes the game. The council's published report states the Home Office confirmed 'no evidence of Wethersfield AAA having an impact on crime levels' — and then, in the very next breath, proceeds: 'Regardless of this, there is anecdotal evidence... that the presence of this community of asylum seekers creates a fear and perception of a risk of crime.' They read the evidence, accepted it, wrote it down, and spent £118,000 of community improvement money on it anyway. Compounding the absurdity: the guards they've hired have no powers to stop, search, or detain anyone beyond those held by any member of the public. Essex County Council has purchased, at public expense, a visible symbol of danger where none has been recorded — staffed by people without the legal authority to act on it.

Progressives have too often reached for statistics before empathy, and 'the data shows no crime rise' can land as the establishment dismissing a felt experience rather than addressing it. Reform is exploiting a real gap — the failure of mainstream politics to take safety as a lived experience seriously enough.
