The denial is doing a lot of work here, and it's worth watching how the trick is performed. Reform's line is narrow and careful, but what does this tell us about Farage's judgement and his actual loyalties that this is the man he calls a personal friend, invites to host him at his hotel, and goes into business with? The move here is the oldest one in the populist playbook — answer a question nobody asked, then declare the matter closed.
This is not a guilt-by-association story. A photo at a party is guilt by association. This is a business partnership, documented. Repeated hotel stays, documented. A personal friendship, stated. And the person at the centre of it was found to have deceived an investor more than two decades ago, actively writes to figures in Putin's inner circle, and was promoting an investment scheme to thousands of people that has since been accused of fraud. Farage — a former commodities trader who has spent a career in financial markets — chose to maintain and deepen that relationship. That is not a coincidence. That is a choice, made repeatedly, over years.

People are right to be suspicious of established power and political insiders who look after their own. That scepticism is healthy and earned. Reform has been skilful at positioning Farage as the man outside the system — and for many voters, that positioning has felt authentic. But the legitimate demand for political transparency cuts both ways. If the grievance is that the powerful protect each other and hide their dealings, then Farage's inner circle deserves exactly the same scrutiny he demands of everyone else. The anger here is real. The target needs adjusting.
